M.ª Elena Torres Lamas

Author
BSc in Biological Sciences with a specialization in Botany and a PhD in Plant Genetic Resources

She teaches Botany and Plant Biology (in first year) at the School of Agricultural, Food and Biosystems Engineering of Madrid. She is the author of a practical manual of college botany and a number of scientific and popularization publications on the conservation of endangered plant species and crop wild relatives.

Santiago Moreno Vázquez

Agricultural Engineer with a PhD in Plant Sciences

He teaches the subjects Ecology and Ecosystem analysis (in second and fourth year respectively) at the School of Agricultural, Food and Biosystems Engineering of Madrid. His practical manual of college Biology was a pioneering teaching resource involving the use of AulaWeb, a virtual classroom, in his school. His main research interests are the characterization of wild germplasm as a source of genes of resistance to pests and diseases in crops.

Juan B. Martínez Laborde

Agricultural Engineer with a PhD in Plant Sciences

He teaches the subjects Plant and Animal Biology, Biology for the Food Industry (in first year) and Origin, importance and systematics of plant genetic resources (in the University Master’s Course on Plant Genetic Resources) at the School of Agricultural, Food and Biosystems Engineering of Madrid. His main research interests are the taxonomy of crucifers and the morphologic characterization of plant genetic resources.

Mauricio Parra Quijano

Agricultural Engineer with a PhD in Plant Genetic Resources

He has participated in the design and development of a number of web applications aimed at teaching and disseminating research findings. In 2004 he created the website Senderos Botánicos (Botanical Tours), a precursor of the interactive book Árboles y Arbustos de la ETS de Ingenieros Agrónomos y de la EU de Ingeniería Técnica Agrícola. In recent years, his research has focused on the development of new applications of geographic information systems and environmental information (or ecogeography) in the collection, conservation and efficient use of germplasm.

Wendy Byrnes Machado

Support Technician
BSc in Translation and Interpreting (English, French and Spanish) and English Philology

She is particularly interested in Biology and environmental issues and has worked as an interpreter in many editions of the Master’s Course on Management, Access, Conservation and Trade of Species: The International Framework, taught at the International University of Andalusia – Antonio Machado Site, in Baeza, Spain. She often translates texts for the UICN and the Secretariat of the CITES Convention, among other organizations.

Álvaro Rodríguez Villalba

Support Technician
MSc in Telecommunications Engineering with a specialization in Telematics

He is passionate about developing web services and solving programming challenges. During his time at University, he worked as a freelance developer for companies such as Adecco, Madrid Polytechnic University or Nokia’s i + d department. He also was member of the IEEE Student Branch of UPM, where he worked on software and hardware development projects, mainly related to the building of drones. He has received several awards in technological innovation.

Carlos Santos Rancaño

Support Technician
MSc in Telecommunications Engineering with a specialization in Electronic Systems

He is enthusiastic about desing and electronic development of Internet of Things, and he loves experimenting with plants. While at University he became the Student’s President of both the IEEE Student Branch of UPM and TelecoEmprende associations. He currently works as electrical  engineer in Microsensor Labs, Chicago. He has been awarded for some of his enterprising ideas and prototypes.

Why this project?

Trees often go unnoticed by most people in spite of being vital elements in cities. They clean the air, increase water retention, improve our health… Learning to identify them is the first step to appreciate their value.
